“I feel like I’m a fat old man out here playing against college kids.. it's absolutely brutal.”
Our buddy Jamie was bent over the bench, looking as if he had just finished a marathon, after what was probably his third shift.
“I know you guys didn’t get faster, but it feels like I’m skating around with a parachute on my back – I literally can’t do s**t out there.”
The rest of the boys laughed. The league was good this year and, like every season, gotten a bit faster.. but the reality was that Jamie had lost his game.
He was always a good player. He had played some junior in high school, skated with his college & pro buddies in the summer, and was a quality men’s league player.
But “adult life” had caught up with him. His job was busy. He'd go to the gym, but only for some strength work. He started skating less, and then when he had his first kid came he decided to give up hockey for the year.
None of this is uncommon for guys, but the reality, was when came back hockey just wasn't as fun.
He was constantly getting out skated or caught by the back check. He'd lose battles in the corner or foot races for pucks. Shifts felt exhausting, and not to mention the next day he'd walk around sore & tight like like he just finished an ironman.
That's when he sent Coach Kyle, who he knew had been working with NHL prospects and pros, a text after a game:
“I know you work with elite guys, but is there any chance you could throw something together for me? I’ve actually been hitting the gym a couple times a week – but I just feel like it’s done nothing for me. I haven’t gotten TOO fat, but honestly it feels like I’m an out of shape version of my dad out there playing with a bunch of young 20-something ringers. Not to mention my body completely feels like crap. This isn’t fun anymore, I either gotta give it up or fix my body.”
The truth was, we had never worked with a beer leaguer before, but the fact a guy had lost his passion for the game and hockey wasn’t fun anymore really hit home.
So, we decided to create a program that would fit his lifestyle:
