He had just come off his second season as a point-per-game winger in one of Canada’s top Junior leagues.

He wasn’t flashy, he didn’t stand out with speed or skill, but he was a consistent producer. He was the kind of player that team’s need to win games.

But despite this, he had zero D1 offers, zero major junior offers, and zero NHL scouts wanting to chat after the game.

He came with all the production, none of the attention or hype.

There was nothing inherent wrong with this. He was a team-first guy and loved to win games more than win player of the week accolades – but he had ambition to play at the next level.

“Kokes, it’s not that I wanna be the center of attention. I just know I can play division 1. I’m as good as other guys around the league committing to schools, and my teammates are all getting looks and having conversations with scouts after games, and it’s just crickets for me. I dunno what I have to do differently.”

He hadn’t been home in 2 off-seasons, but now sat in our office clearly dejected. He hadn’t come to just visit, but to chat if he should just accept that he wasn’t a D1 player or change something.

We encouraged him to have a conversation with his coach, get feedback on his game, and then we could chat further.

“He said he always recommends me to scouts when they ask about guys they should be watching, and is surprised I don’t have offers. He’s even asked a couple of Coaches and they say it’s a skating game in D1 and a big jump in speed – and they just don’t think my game could translate to the next level.”

This stung – but it was good news.

So we connected him with a local power skating coach and asked him to look at his skating to see where it could improve.

“He’s a great player & a smooth skater, of course we could clean up a couple of things, but honestly his problem is that he just doesn’t have that punch in his stride or first steps. It’s like he’s hitting the gas but his car just doesn’t have the horsepower to really let it rip.”

It was clear – he had to develop the explosive power that would translate to speed on the ice.

So we offered to create him a program that would do just that. It was going to be different than workouts he was doing on his own – but if he committed to 12 weeks we knew he’d see the on-ice results he needed to elevate his game.

He was in.

So we crafted the perfect workout program to develop that explosive speed.

  • We shifted away from just heavy lifts & instead focused on developing strength that would actually translate to the ice with full body integrated workouts.
  • We added speed & athleticism to every workout. With plyo and power work that would help him to refine movements & generate more power in his stride, and speed work that would refine his footwork, change of direction, and movement mechanics.
  • We developed functional mobility that would not only let him feel and move better, but also refine his stride mechanics and let him skate lower and generate more power from his stride.
  • We created elite conditioning levels that would let him skate at his top speed all shift long without slowing down and earn him more ice time from his coach.

He committed to the process and the results paid off.

Each week he said he felt his first steps were getting faster. His skills coach started commenting about how he was getting out of the corner faster and his change of direction was more aggressive. When he got to training camp his Coaches kept commenting on how he was a completely different player – asking him where the “extra gas” came from.

Finally the season came around, where he put up 8 points in 3 of his first games. And that’s when it happened. The first D1 scout asked to chat after the game.

“They said they’d be watching me this season. He said that my coach had recommended he watch me last season but he just didn’t see the flash that would translate – but he’s super impressed with my game so far”.

He continued to show up on the score sheet and catch the attention of scouts.

By Christmas he had 36 points in 23 games and had talked to over 9 division 1 coaches. The second half of the season came with 4 firm offers, including one from his dream school.

By committing to transforming his training, he had transformed his game, and ultimately trajectory in hockey.  

He had earned a full ride to play division 1 hockey.

The next season we had 4 of his teammates reach out for the same program. Their coach had recommended to “get on with whatever he’s doing.” A handful of pros he skated with in the summer also asked to get on the program.

What kind of exercises are included?

Admittedly, a lot of these exercises will be new for a lot of athletes.

This isn’t just a classic bodybuilding style workout where you’ll see 3 sets of squats and lunges. Relentless programs are loaded with integrative exercises that challenge you with unconventional movements. 

You’ll have a Youtube Playlist with demonstrations of each exercise in that days workout so that you’ll always know exactly what to do.

What kind of equipment do I need?

This program was designed to be performed with a super basic gym setup. We don't believe in big fancy gym setups or the latest equipment. This program includes: dumbbells, cables/bands, barbells, kettlebells, and mini-bands. For any exercise that may require a specialized piece of equipment (trapbar/landmine/etc.) we've included alternative exercises guide, but 95% of gyms will have exactly what you need.
